The most recent sources state that Manchester United is thinking about making a big move to sign highly regarded Giorgio Scalvini, a central defender for Atalanta.

The 20-year-old has already demonstrated his exceptional talent in Serie A, and Atalanta is currently working to sign him to a new, long-term contract.

The Red Devils are actively looking to add a new defender, and United is eager to sign him. Following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment, which has made him a 25% shareholder in Man United, the club’s executives are looking to fill a number of vacancies in the roster.

Man United is searching for a defender and a striker to make up the gaps in their roster. The Red Devils are looking to get a new center-back because Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, and Victor Lindelof’s futures are unclear and Jonny Evans is growing older.

According to the Italian website Calciomercato (via TEAMTALK), Scalvini is supposedly valued at up to €60 million (£51.2 million), and United is interested in signing him.

Naturally, paying so much for a player this young would be prohibitive, but United has made similar acquisitions in the past, most notably from Atalanta.
Six months after turning twenty, Rasmus Hojlund left the Italian team in the summer to sign a £72 million contract to join Old Trafford. For £73 million, United acquired 21-year-old Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

After moving from Brescia to Atalanta’s junior programme in 2015, Scalvini has already earned seven senior caps for Italy. Six of his 74 Atalanta outings have come in the Europa League.
