Sergio Reguilon, a left back for Tottenham Hotspur, is allegedly close to signing a loan agreement with Manchester United.

The 26-year-old has been permitted to go to Old Trafford for a physical, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.

Due to the unavailability of Luke Shaw and a setback for backup Tyrell Malacia, the Old Trafford team has been forced to look outside of the area for reinforcements.

Marc Cucurella was initially the club’s target, but his recent performance for Chelsea put a wrench in the plans.

Cucurella would be ineligible to play for a third club this season due to the rules around player transfers if United choose to send him back to Chelsea in January.

The 26-year-old Reguilon has been given permission to go to Manchester and have checked out.

The Spaniard has experience playing in the Premier League after wearing the Spurs uniform in the past.

Furthermore, despite only making a few matches, his most recent time at Atletico Madrid gave him priceless La Liga experience.

Reguilon was chosen by United for strategic and financial reasons. He not only brings a lot of experience, but the loan agreement also provides financial responsibility in these unsure times.

The team is also hoping to sign midfielder Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina before the transfer window closes.

In the meanwhile, United had to resort to playing Diogo Dalot out of position at left-back during their latest meeting against Nottingham Forest. Although Dalot was able to hold his own, a natural left-back is clearly needed.

If it happens, the acquisition of Reguilon will unquestionably improve United’s defensive options.

The public will be interested to see how he fits into Erik ten Hag’s system and whether he can succeed Shaw at left-back without replacing him.
