Man United in talks to sign 5 ft 8 “liability”, he could be even worse than Weghorst

Just a few days ago, the news of Luke Shaw’s brutal injury blow shocked Manchester United.

Because of that, the Red Devils may decide to focus on the transfer market to address this issue.

When will Luke Shaw make a full recovery?

The team worries that the left-back’s injury blow is now more serious than they first anticipated.

Indeed, Shaw has a muscular injury, and the Manchester Evening News reports that he could now be sidelined for up to two months. This means that Shaw might not return to action until late October.

United had previously predicted that the England international would just miss a few weeks of competition.

Who might succeed Luke Shaw at Manchester United?

Due to an injury to Tyrell Malacia, Shaw’s backup left back, Erik ten Hag is now without a senior left back.

Moving Lisandro Martinez to left back is one option, but there’s also the chance of making a deal in the transfer market before it closes on Friday night.

Marc Cucurella of Chelsea is one target, claims Fabrizio Romano.

On Saturday night, the journalist posted on social media that “Manchester United made contact with Chelsea to ask about conditions of Marc Cucurella deal on potential loan—no bid or concrete talks yet.”

The calibre of Marc Cucurella?

Sadly, the response is no. With Brighton, the Spaniard made a splash in the Premier League with his electrifying displays down the left wing.

Cucurella did indeed rank among the top 14% of Premier League left-backs for progressive carries and the top 12% of positionally comparable players for progressive passes during the 2021/22 season, according to FBref.

Marc Cucurella of Chelsea

The now 25-year-old who was playing for Brighton at the time completed more passes overall and more passes into the final third than only 10% of left-backs.

In the present, the 5 foot 8 full-back is now a “liability” at Chelsea, according to reporter Josh Bunting.

Cucurella placed in the top 39% and top 55% among full-backs for progressive carries during the 2022–2023 season. That is a significant decline and speaks to the terrible run of play he has had at Stamford Bridge.

He is in the top 74% for interceptions and the top 77% for the percentage of dribblers tackled, which shows how poor of a defensive player he has been.

This would be yet another bad deal for Ten Hag and company, who appear to be mistake-prone at the back and weak in offensive skills.

They didn’t choose the Wout Weghorst short-term option until January, and we all know how that turned out.

The Dutchman was brought in on a temporary basis after Cristiano Ronaldo left and Man United was unable to identify a suitable replacement.

However, it’s easy to say the move was a failure given that he went scoreless in each of his 17 Premier League games for the team.

Undoubtedly, United needs a left-back, but choosing a player as ineffective and unpopular as Cucurella as a temporary solution would not benefit them. In fact, the Weghorst catastrophe might occur again.

The club’s hiring team would be better to look for alternatives here.
