An updated report on a prospective transfer target has surfaced, and Manchester United are still searching for new players who can have an immediate influence on the team at Old Trafford this season.

What recent news regarding transfers at Man United?

The Daily Mail reports that Everton has underlined its expectations for the summer transfer of their star midfielder Amadou Onana.

The Toffees have outlined their requirements if they were to be willing to trade Onana, but Manchester United is reportedly very keen in signing the Belgian star this summer as a potential replacement for Sofyan Amrabat.

Romeo Lavia is said to be valued at higher by Everton than by Southampton (£60 million), who believe he has more experience than the Saints’ young player. Everton is also said to be uninterested in any swap agreements that might be put out in an effort to sign him.

What is the offer from Amadou Onana?

It’s no secret that Erik ten Hag is still searching for top talent to bolster the Man United squad this summer, and after last night’s subpar performance by his midfielders against Wolverhampton Wanderers, it wouldn’t be surprising if recruitment efforts stepped up at Old Trafford.

Despite beating Wolves 1-0, Ten Hag’s team did not perform particularly well on their return to Premier League action, and the centre of the field came under fire for being overpowered the entire time.

After the game on Monday Night Football, former Manchester United icon and Sky Sports analyst Gary Neville immediately criticised the midfield presence:

“Manchester United’s midfield was completely empty and nonexistent. If you saw Manchester United throughout the preseason, leaving Casemiro on his own when Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes advance looked terrific. However, you need to strike a balance.

As a result, the addition of Onana might give the Red Devils the midfield partner Casemiro so desperately needs, as well as greatly enhance the crucial middle third ball retention.

The Belgian international was a standout player for the team the entire season despite getting caught up in a relegation battle with Everton. He was strong in attack and competent defensively, making him the ideal box-to-box midfielder.

Over 33 Premier League appearances, the £100k per week star contributed two assists, completed 84% of his passes, won 57% of defensive ground and aerial duels, and established himself as a confident yet cool asset.

The 21-year-old is described as a “aggressive & tenacious tackler” with a “very high work rate & determination,” “great pace & coordination for a player of his size,” and eventually as a “one-man army in midfield” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Given that Casemiro, 31, is frequently forced to cover his less well-positioned colleagues in both defensive and offensive situations, all of these qualities make him the ideal midfield partner for Casemiro.

In contrast, if Onana were positioned in midfield beside him, the Everton player could handle the box-to-box responsibilities, freeing up the Brazilian superstar to focus on screening the back four and using his great passing range from a deep-lying position.

With that stated, there is no question that Onana would be a worthy substitute and the ideal player profile to form a dream combo with Casemiro this season and beyond if Man United is unsuccessful in their pursuit of Amrabat.
