New target: Manchester United in transfer talks over move to sign 6ft 5 “one-man army”

Amadou Onana, a midfielder for Everton, has apparently been the subject of negotiations between Manchester United and the club at Old Trafford.

What recent news regarding transfers at Man United?

Despite the ongoing takeover drama, Erik ten Hag and the Red Devils have been successful in the transfer market thus far this summer, bringing three new players to Manchester in time for the next Premier League season.

Following the completion of the transfers of Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana, and Mason Mount from Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Atalanta, respectively, the focus is now on bringing in another midfielder.

Sofyan Amrabat of Fiorentina seems to be the primary target; last week, rumours claimed that the player’s agents were in the UK to negotiate a transfer. In the event that United are unable in acquiring the services of the Moroccan international, it appears that they have backup plans, one of which is another Onana.

The Daily Mail published an update on Man United’s potential next transfer move in a roundup of transfers over the previous 48 hours.

They claimed that Leeds United’s Tyler Adams and Amrabat Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo are the targets, but the article also states that conversations have already taken place regarding transfers for Onana and Todibo, even if those talks have not yet progressed.

“Sofyan Amrabat of Fiorentina and Jean-Clair Todibo of Nice are two players United are interested in signing, but they must first sell.

The virtues of Tyler Adams of Leeds United and Amadou Onana of Everton have also been discussed by United, but those negotiations have stalled.

Regarding players who might go, the source states that United is attempting to sell Donny van de Beek and Fred, while Harry Maguire is coveted by West Ham and Eric Bailly has offers from Saudi Arabia on the table.

Amadou Onana: who is he?

Onana, who typically plays as a holding midfielder, appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high €45 million Transfermarkt valuation. The 6’5″ Belgian, who has been with Everton for a year, can also play as a centre back or central midfielder.

Jacek Kulig, a football talent scout, branded the 21-year-old a “one-man army” after he spent time on the roster of Hoffenheim in Germany before signing with Hamburger SV in 2020. After a year, Onana moved once more, this time to Lille in France, where he lasted an additional year and made a total of 42 appearances.

The midfielder was later acquired by Everton for €35 million in 2022, and he has since made 35 appearances for the Toffees in England, helping them narrowly avoid relegation last season.

He appears to be a midfielder who will only get better over time based on his market worth, and some at Old Trafford may view him as a player with great potential. Ten Hag’s versatility would also provide coverage at centre back and even further forward in midfield, but from the looks of things, he might be seen as a long-term replacement for Casemiro, who will turn 32 next year, making this a potential transaction to watch out for.
