Man Utd in the race to sign £13m gem who’s “born to score”, it’d be over for Martial

According to rumours that Manchester United are also interested in Santos sensation Marcos Leonardo, it appears that Rasmus Hojlund may not be the only striker headed to Old Trafford this summer.

What would the price of Marco Leonardo be?

The 20-year-old Brazilian is reportedly up for sale this summer for as little as €15 million (£13 million), according to the Italian website CalcioMercato.it, and the Old Trafford team is reportedly in the running to sign him.

While the article does say that the 5′ 9″ star is eager to team up with former United manager Jose Mourinho at AS Roma, other reports suggest that negotiations have stagnated with the Serie A club, thus opening the door for Erik ten Hag and company to seize the initiative.

Although 90min did indicate earlier this summer that it was not out of the question that two new strikers may be on their way to the Theatre of Dreams, the Premier League heavyweights have already reached an agreement with Atalanta for the £72 million transfer of Hojlund.

What’s Marcos Leonardo’s name?

The absence of Wout Weghorst, who managed just two goals for United in all competitions last season, leaves Anthony Martial as Ten Hag’s lone senior option through the middle. Given Martial’s dismal injury history—he missed 27 games last season—this is a terrifying thought.

While the former Ajax manager has argued that the squad plays its “best football” when the 27-year-old is on the pitch, it is difficult to ignore the reality that he has now only scored 11 league goals in English football since the start of the 2020/21 season.

With rumours claiming that the Red Devils are open to bids for the former Monaco player going into the window, Ten Hag’s decision to sign both Hojlund and Leonardo this summer may well be the last straw for Martial to stay at the club.

Young Leonardo has been far more impressive lately despite still being somewhat raw, having scored 14 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions so far this season, compared to the current United player’s nine goals in 29 appearances in 2022/23.

The Brazilian U20 international has already scored 47 goals in 149 appearances for his current team at the senior level, despite still being relatively young. Talent scout Jacek Kulig calls him a player with “all the tools to become an absolute killer in the penalty area.”

The Santos wonder, who Kulig also praised as being “born to score,” has six goals in just 12 league games this season, making it obvious why there is so much interest in his services right now.

After eight years in Manchester, Martial has unquestionably had more than enough time and opportunities to make an impression, so the acquisition of two young, ambitious players in Hojlund and Leonardo should put an end to his tenure at the team.
