ETH could get Antony firing as Sky Sports reveal Man Utd interest in £35m “speedster”

With Erik ten Hag still apparently looking to upgrade his present right-back options, Manchester United is reportedly keeping an eye on Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong.

What are the newest transfer speculations involving Man United?

While the focus of current discussion is on United’s pursuit of Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana and Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund, Sky Sports Germany writer Florian Plettenberg has disclosed that the Red Devils are also “monitoring” Frimpong, with a figure of approximately £35 million having been proposed.

The transfer insider tweeted about that interest, saying: “Arsenal and #Frimpong, it’s not a hot topic at this stage.” ManUtd is still keeping an eye on his position. The new owners must decide what to do next. The #MUFC Player hasn’t made a choice yet.

He is thinking about his alternatives. But Alonso needs a key player. Price: £35 million.

This comes in the wake of a Football Insider story from April, which stated that the Old Trafford club was in “pole position” to clinch the transfer of the 22-year-old, with the likes of Bayern Munich and Barcelona also reportedly showing interest in the former Celtic whiz.

Is Jeremie Frimpong any good?

The Netherlands international has developed into perhaps “one of the best wing-backs in Europe” after moving to Germany from Glasgow in January 2021 on a reputed £11.5 million transfer, claims talent scout Jacek Kulig.

The young “speedster,” as Kulig dubbed him, has already contributed to 31 goals for the Bundesliga team in just 96 games across all competitions, after previously contributing 11 goals and assists in 51 games while playing for Parkhead.

Given that neither Diogo Dalot nor Aaron Wan-Bissaka have lately really nailed down that role, the 5 foot 7 dynamo may end up being a long-term solution for Ten Hag on the right of the defence.

However, the 24-year-old appeared to be “a bit off it” after the World Cup break, according to Colin Millar of the Mirror, and Dalot has only recently signed a new long-term contract at the Theatre of Dreams after losing his spot to Wan-Bisska in the latter part of the season.

The latter man’s talent in the last third is still relatively restricted since he only participated in one goal last season across all competitions, and it wasn’t that long ago that people were tipping him for an exit.

The arrival of Frimpong, who scored 20 goals and had 20 assists in 2022–23, would be a much more attack-minded choice, with the potential for the Amsterdam native to aid in setting up Antony to score down the right wing.

The £86 million Brazilian had a difficult first season in English football, managing just four goals and two assists in 25 Premier League games. However, Frimpong’s extra support in his wide position might be the key to turning things around for the Brazilian.

The fact that the Leverkusen player rates in the top 1% among his European counterparts for touches in the attacking penalty area, as opposed to Dalot and Wan Bissaka, who only rank in the top 33% and top 13%, respectively, speaks to his willingness to advance and assist those in front of him.

Even though Frimpong was mostly playing as a more experienced right wing back, it still demonstrates his desire to have an impact at the top of the field. By doing so, he was able to open up space for Antony, who constantly tries to cut in onto his stronger left foot, with his numerous overlapping runs.

Next season, that combination may possibly be lethal, guaranteeing that United’s mercurial wideman can start to properly establish himself as an offensive weapon.
