As Erik ten Hag looks to strengthen his squad this summer, Manchester United is getting closer to signing a Premier League star.

The transfer of a certain ace from one of the Red Devils’ rival teams to Old Trafford this window has been rumoured, and the transaction is getting closer.

What has recently happened with Mason Mount and Manchester United?

Mason Mount, a midfielder for Chelsea, is reportedly “getting closer” to signing with Manchester United, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.

According to the article, United’s “improve” bid of £45 million plus $5 million in add-ons was rejected by Chelsea, who “countered” with a bid of £60 million plus $5 million in add-ons. Ornstein also stated that United “have a limit.”

According to the reports, the Blues are ‘trying to comply’ with the Englishman’s requests while still holding out for a contract that includes a compromise.

Mason Mount might have something to offer Manchester United.

Chelsea’s poor Premier League performance in the previous season—which saw them finish 12th in the standings with just 11 victories in 38 games—was a source of much regret.

Despite making 24 league appearances, Mount has struggled alongside his old team, scoring just five goals and providing five assists.

Described as “incredible” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the Englishman had his greatest season in the final third of the field in the Premier League during 2021–2022, recording an astounding 21 G/A in 32 games while tallying 11 goals and ten assists, according to Sofascore.

The statistics from that season demonstrate the type of player Ten Hag might bring to his United side, since the Portsmouth-native has the skills necessary to succeed in a similar manner to a current Old Trafford great.

For the 2021/22 season, Mount was statistically compared to Bruno Fernandes, who has been Ten Hag’s shining star as evidenced by his 16 G/A recorded in the Premier League this season, scoring and assisting eight goals in 37 games.

When comparing the two via FBref based on Mount’s previous highs, it was clear that the Dutchman might provide his team with a player that could match the Portuguese ace’s highs.

According to FBref for 2021–2022, the pair excelled in progressive play, with Fernandes averaging 2.26 progressive carries and 6.86 progressive passes per 90, with Mount just behind with 6.25 progressive passes and soaring with 3.50 progressive carries per 90.

The 28-year-old United gem was outscored by the Englishman, who averaged 0.38 non-penalty goals to 0.29 per 90, demonstrating that both players possess a high level of proficiency in front of goal.

Even though scoring goals is the goal of the game, Fernandes and Mount excelled as the team’s creators at the time, with Fernandes averaging a staggering 2.5 critical passes per game and Mount coming in second with 1.8.

According to their statistics, the two perform similarly while playing at their best, giving a promising sign of what Ten Hag’s midfield at Old Trafford may have in store for the upcoming season.
