Man United identify 27 y/o as possible right-back upgrade, could be available for £35m

As they continue to restructure their playing roster, Man United may make a bid for Denzel Dumfries.

In order to keep Manchester United moving forward, Erik ten Hag needs money to spend this summer.

The team may use some further work in a number of spots, but there may be too much to complete in one window.

Right-back is still up for dispute. While Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s performance at the close of the season provided some hope, Diogo Dalot just signed a new deal.

Denzel Dumfries of Inter Milan, a right defender, is mentioned in a lengthy piece by The Athletic.

The 27-year-old is reportedly being considered by United as a potential right-back upgrade. The athlete makes this summer’s “most compelling” argument.

The Dutchman could be had for only £35 million, and United scout reports highly praise his “intelligence” and “athleticism.”

The Dutchman has previously been connected to United, which is reasonable given that Ten Hag has demonstrated a predilection for moving for players he is familiar with (from his time in the Netherlands).

Dumfries is a fascinating city. He can blow both hot and cold whenever I’ve observed him. His lows can be rather terrible while his highs are extremely high.

The question of whether he is an improvement over Wan-Bissaka is peculiar. Dumfries is stronger in terms of mobility and in the latter third. It is a downgrade defensively, especially in terms of positioning and tackling.

I suppose there are more urgent requirements in the squad that need to be addressed first during this summer, like the custodian, striker and central midfield positions. However, if Dumfries is the player Ten Hag wants to sign, then we must support the manager.
