Only 16 passes, 28% duels won: Ten Hag needs to offload lazy star

On Thursday, Erik ten Hag took a chance against Brighton and made two significant substitutions, bringing in Fred and Anthony Martial. It is reasonable to conclude that the experiment was a complete failure.

The Frenchman’s story has repeated itself over and over again in recent seasons. He does well in a few games before reverting to his previous indolence and lack of desire.

The 27-year-old revived his waning United career during the preseason and won the new manager’s trust, but he has continued to let him down.

Although his record is very bad, one can overlook his injury problems. However, he doesn’t contribute much in terms of working hard and shutting down the opposition in games where he has started.

Even his ability to be clinical, which sets him apart from his attacking counterparts, was absent on Thursday as his lone shot from a clear chance went straight at the Brighton goalie.

His back-to-goal play was poor; he barely managed to hold off the defender, and when given the chance, he was unable to turn fast. In general, it was another forgettable performance.

Martial touched the ball 35 times and misplaced it nine times. Throughout his 84 minutes on the pitch, he only completed 16 passes successfully.

The United manager must have been hoping for a spark from the French international, but regrettably, it never materialised with only Wout Weghorst on the bench.

He only prevailed in two of the seven duels, and he frequently erred when presented with the chance to seize a loose ball.

In the summer, ETH is in search of a talented striker.

He attempted three dribbles, but only one of them succeeded, and that one was the highlight of his performance.

It is Ten Hag and United’s fault that their only options for scoring are the former Monaco player and Weghorst, and it is costing them dearly.

He hardly made an effort and appeared to be quite lazy, therefore United has to sever its relationship with him this summer and replace him with a top-tier striker.
