According to 90min, Manchester United and custodian David de Gea are nearing an agreement on a new contract.

De Gea is under contract to the team through the end of the current campaign, and United has been in discussions with him about a new contract extension for some time.

Although United has the opportunity to activate an automatic one-year extension on his existing contract, 90min reports that the club is seeking to agree to a pay cut from his enormous £375,000-a-week salary.

The club’s highest-paid player is a Spaniard, but 90min claims that De Gea has opted to forego a large pay rise in order to extend his time at Old Trafford.

The 32-year-old is a veteran member of the team and joined United in 2011 from Atletico Madrid. He is currently in his 12th season at Old Trafford and has made 536 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions.

According to 90min, De Gea’s new contract has no more “major” obstacles to overcome; only minor issues need to be worked out.

Fair enough

In order to strengthen other parts of the pitch, Manchester United believes that maintaining De Gea is the smartest move for the team.

De Gea’s error-proneness has increased in recent years, therefore United ought to strive to create additional competition by purchasing a second top-tier custodian. Dean Henderson will undoubtedly leave in the summer if he signs a new contract.

Given that De Gea is standing in his way and that Henderson has grown disgruntled with playing the supporting position at Old Trafford, it makes sense for him to ultimately depart the team.

Jutarnji, a Croatian news source, claims that United is eager to recruit Dominik Livakovic. The Croatian international made an impression during the World Cup in Qatar, and the Red Devils are eager to meet his €10 million release clause.

De Gea was harshly criticised for his subpar performance in the 3-0 loss to Sevilla in the Europa League, but he responded by playing fantastically against Brighton in the FA Cup semi-final last week at Wembley.
