Signed by Van Gaal, now worth £50m: ETH must finally cash in on MUFC’s “proven player”

Anthony Martial, the injury-prone failure who failed to make an impact at Wembley, was one player who once again underperformed as Manchester United narrowly defeated Brighton and Hove Albion in a shootout to go to the FA Cup semifinals.

The Frenchman was a mere ‘passenger’ against the Seagulls, according to Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, having registered just 24 touches in his 85-minute game, despite being inserted into the starting lineup on Sunday despite limping off against Sevilla just a few days earlier.

The marksman’s lack of skill was demonstrated despite possibly being “starved” of service, according to Jamie Jackson of The Guardian; specifically, he failed poorly in an effort to lob Robert Sanchez from close range.

There will be some wondering how the Louis van Gaal signing is still on the books in Manchester nearly seven years after scoring a late winner against Everton at the same level of the competition during an impressive debut campaign at Old Trafford.

The news that the former Monaco player might be leaving the Red Devils this summer will likely come as a comfort to many. According to MEN, the latest indication is that Erik ten Hag’s team might still make a sizable profit by selling the divisive striker.

What is Martial now worth?

The 30-cap magician was signed in 2015 on a £36 million deal, making him the most expensive teenager in the world at the time of his transfer from France. He has just over a year left on his current contract and has the option of a 12-month extension.

The £250,000 per week asset appears to still be in high demand almost eight years after the deadline day transfer, which may help increase United’s transfer budget this summer.

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, who spoke with Football FanCast, the former Lyon player could still command between £40m and £50m if he were to leave before the start of the following season.

According to the transfer insider, Martial might fall further down the pecking order if United do as expected and sign a new number nine. In order to collect money for their own transfer ambitions as well, they might be open to bids for the Frenchman.

“Considering that Anthony Martial is a seasoned player, you should expect to pay between £40 million and £50 million for someone like that.

“I’m sure Manchester United fans would probably agree that they just haven’t seen enough to know that he is a top striker.”

The expectation is that summer suitors will ready to take the chance on Martial’s maybe unrealized potential since, as O’Rourke said, United seem to play their “best football” with him leading the line, according to Ten Hag.

The top-four contenders for the Red Devils, though, simply cannot afford to wait any longer to see if the 5 foot 11 striker will deliver, thus it should come as no surprise that rumours of a bid for England captain Harry Kane are intensifying.

Martial should not be surprised if he finds himself on the discard pile at the end of the season after enduring another injury-plagued campaign in which he has scored just seven times in 20 appearances on all fronts. Ten Hag must be ruthless and cash in as soon as possible.
