Manchester United were willing to pay £75 million to sign Frenkie de Jong last summer, but the midfielder was reluctant to leave Barcelona, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Last summer, the Red Devils identified the Dutch international as their top midfield target, and talks with the Blaugrana lasted several weeks.

United eventually agreed on a transfer fee, but De Jong refused to negotiate personal terms.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Red Devils accepted a fee of around £75 million for the Dutchman but were unable to persuade him to join despite the opportunity to reunite with Erik ten Hag.

Man Utd are unlikely to sign De Jong anytime soon.
Last summer, Ten Hag was keen on signing De Jong, but the deal fell through.

As a result, in August, United focused on Casemiro. This has turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as the Brazilian has played a significant role this season.

This season, the former Real Madrid player has five goals and six assists for United. He’s also been outstanding in his own half, winning several tackles and duels.

As a result of De Jong’s refusal, United have benefited. Ten Hag is still interested in signing his former Ajax star, but we believe a transfer is unlikely.

De Jong has had his best season with the Blaugrana thus far. We don’t see him looking for a new challenge. He was hesitant to leave last summer and may still be.
