Ten Hag eyes Man Utd swoop for “unplayable” £50m machine, he’s a big McTominay upgrade

As Erik ten Hag continues his rebuild, Manchester United is considering making a move for World Cup champion Alexis Mac Allister this summer.

What’s new with Alexis MacAllister joining Manchester United?

According to Argentine journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, United is vying with Liverpool and Arsenal to sign the Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder to an extension of his contract at Old Trafford during the summer transfer season.

Merlo asserts that two clubs are “already negotiating” with the player, but he doesn’t specify whose clubs those are.

In order for any team to pry Mac Allister away from the club during the January transfer window, the south coast side was looking at £50m, however this sum may have climbed by the conclusion of the season.

Could Alexis Mac Allister join Manchester United?

The addition of Mac Allister would undoubtedly strengthen Ten Hag’s squad, which is still lacking a few players needed to fight for the Premier League crown.

The Argentinian might be a significant improvement over Scott McTominay given that the Dutchman plans to release some deadwood and underperformers over the summer.

In fact, the 24-year-old has outperformed the Scot this season in all areas of the field, as evidenced by his greater pass success rate (86.7% vs. 81.9%), more goals (eight to none), shots per game (2.35 vs. 0.78), tackle wins (30 vs. 18), and more goals (eight to none).

When it comes to goals, total shots, and successful penalty kicks, Mac Allister ranks in the top 5% across Europe’s top five leagues, making him one of the best goal-scoring midfielders on the continent if he were to join United. Ten Hag would love to add another midfielder who can pose a significant goal threat.

Another major advantage for the Dutchman is his high-level experience. The midfielder was outstanding for the entirety of the competition, and reporter Roy Nemer praised him for being “unplayable” during Argentina’s victory in the 2022 World Cup final.

Argentinean author Alexis Mac Allister
With an overall Sofascore rating of 7.05/10 over six games, he demonstrated his attacking prowess on the biggest stage of all, scoring once, setting up two significant scoring opportunities, making 1.3 important passes per game, and taking 1.2 shots.

Despite making 20 appearances total and starting just nine Premier League games for United this season, McTominay’s time with the Red Devils appears to be drawing to a close.

A player who is a significant improvement over the 26-year-old and who can help strengthen United’s midfield is Mac Allister.
