Sky Sports: Man Utd in “talks” to sign “dangerous” £35m ace, imagine him and Varane

A deal for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong is reportedly in the works with Manchester United, as manager Erik ten Hag looks to expand his alternatives at full-back.

What has changed since Frimpong joined Man United?

The Red Devils are reportedly in talks with the player’s representatives about a transfer for the 22-year-old, according to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Germany. The former Celtic star is rumored to be considering leaving the BayArena this summer.

The transfer insider revealed this on Twitter, writing: “News #Frimpong: Talks between his agent Jeffrey Lemmert and @ManUtd have begun! First round was very encouraging. Ten Hag respects the athlete. In the summer, Frimpong is free to depart from Leverkusen. Contract expires in 2025.

This comes after an earlier report from Football Insider that claimed United had made a move for the Dutch international, with a ‘belief’ that a deal can be reached for a price of around £35 million.

Would Frimpong blend in well at Manchester United?

If the Old Trafford team decides to part ways with Aaron Wan-Bissaka at the end of the season, as The Athletic reported on Monday, “an attacking right-back will come on the agenda.” The Englishman had previously been linked with a move away before the start of the current campaign as well.

Despite a slight upswing since the World Cup, the 25-year-old has only produced one assist in 22 appearances this season, a sign of attack-related weaknesses after previously being called “useless” on the ball by club icon Paul Scholes.

Diogo Dalot would appear to remain at the Theatre of Dreams if the former Crystal Palace player were to leave, but even the Portugal international has occasionally played a bit of a liar so far this season, contributing just one goal and three assists in 33 games on all fronts.

The pair’s rather meager offensive performance is undoubtedly inferior to that of Frimpong, who has so far this season added eight goals and nine assists across all competitions, as previously praised by Riga manager Mihails Koevs.

The 5 foot 7 ace from Amsterdam, who can play at wing-back or as a full-back with vision, would appear to be the defensive gem that Ten Hag is likely looking for. The pair could potentially make an excellent combination on the right side of the backline.

With Varane winning an impressive 71% of his aerial duels in the Premier League this season and having an 86% pass accuracy rate, the towering, 6 foot 3 Frenchman would undoubtedly be able to provide a stronger physical presence alongside the small-framed Frimpong.

With the Leverkusen player ranking in the top 1% of those in his position in Europe for progressive carries, successful take-ons, and touches in the attacking penalty area, it would appear that having that steady and experienced presence at center-back would give the Leverkusen player the freedom to advance down the right flank.

Frimpong, who made his senior-level debut in 2019 while playing for Glasgow, is still relatively inexperienced, but Varane, who is 29 and has experienced success at the highest levels of the game after winning the World Cup and the Champions League over the years, would likely be a valuable addition to Frimpong’s team.

According to Ten Hag, the former Real Madrid star is a “leader” who “puts everyone in the right position,” so Varane may very well be able to help the young Dutchman adjust to life in England much more easily.
