The Manchester United academy is perhaps one of the most notorious in the world since it consistently turns out some of the greatest players in the league.

Many people would consider the class of ’92 to be the gold standard for youth production, but even more recently, players like Marcus Rashford have shone after receiving their breaks as free-scoring 18-year-olds.

At Old Trafford, it appears as though a new up-and-coming talent emerges every season, whether it be through standout U21 performances or by seizing the opportunity to play for the first team when it comes their way.

In Mateo Mejia, the former is unquestionably true, and there is optimism that a chance will soon present itself to make the latter a reality.

Alejandro Garnacho’s career path is comparable to that of the tricky winger, who joined from Real Madrid when he was just 16 years old. This is definitely a pursuit that the 19-year-old will try to imitate given his recent rise to prominence as someone who hangs out with the senior group.

Mateo Mejia: who is he?

The Argentine moved from Atletico Madrid in 2020, arriving at the same age as the aforementioned starlet and with an impressive amount of traction for someone so young. He also joined from a Madrid club.

Garnacho has now made 30 appearances for the senior team, scoring four goals and dishing out five assists. His lightning-quick pace and undeniable flair have earned him praise as he gradually adjusts to life in Erik ten Hag’s team.

Mejia is a long way from that situation, but given how he has become more integrated into the city as his performances rise, the teenage sensation is not far off.

The Spanish-born speedster, who has played in all three positions up front this season, has taken on a more creative role this year with four assists through ten Premier League 2 games.

For someone who is enjoying their first full season with the U21s, that is a fantastic performance. Even before he signed, the 19-year-old was referred to be a “wonderkid” by one source.

For comparison, before being called up, Garnacho had only managed to contribute to five goals in his first 12 games at the aforementioned level.

They share a similar drive to use their swift feet and intricate skills to display their talents, despite the fact that he is more of a finisher. Mejia might be able to offer his young teammate, who he hopes to play with more of next season on the first squad, a creative counterpoint.
