In Thursday’s 4-1 victory over Real Betis at Old Trafford, Wout Weghorst finally scored, although the 30-year-old could have scored a hat trick if he had taken advantage of all his opportunities.

In Friday’s pre-game press conference, Erik ten Hag praised the 30-year-“intelligence” old’s but also acknowledging that the striker frequently “fails” in front of goal despite having numerous chances to score.

“I think he has intelligence from situations, he is a very excellent anticipator,” he said, according to ManUtd.com. He frequently finds himself in a good situation yet fails. Yet he continues on. He displayed remarkable personality and character as a result. He might have scored immediately away, but he stays committed, keeps working, and keeps placing himself in advantageous situations. Finally, he achieved both his objective and his reward.

Minutes into the game, Weghorst thought he had opened the scoring by heading in from close range, but the goal was disallowed for offside. After being set up by Luke Shaw, Weghorst shot low and wide of the post in the 17th minute.

In the 26th minute, Weghorst managed to sidefoot over the bar after Antony sent a pass into the box that he could have bundled into. Weghorst scored late on by slipping in a rebounded shot from close range.

Since signing on loan from Burnley, the 30-year-old has made 15 appearances across all leagues, tallying two goals and three assists. Weghorst has struggled this season, which is understandable given that he has only attempted eight attempts in seven Premier League games.

Under Ten Hag, he hasn’t missed a game, though. Weghorst contributed more to the team than just goal scoring against Betis, as evidenced by his four turnovers, two chances created, and one successful dribble.

Even if it’s unlikely that United would retain him after the season, they will be appreciative of his efforts. Weghorst is a tactically adaptable player with high levels of work ethic and a selfless mentality, thus the fact that Ten Hag keeps using him in every match speaks volumes about his importance.
