Man Utd: £40k-a-week star now ‘really wants’ Old Trafford move

The Premier League outfit have been looking to sign a centre-forward following the termination of Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract in November.

Man Utd transfer news – Wout Weghorst

As first broken by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have reached a full verbal agreement to sign Weghorst on loan from Championship side Burnley for the remainder of the season.

The Red Devils will pay a fee of €3m (around £2.6m) to Beşiktaş – where the Dutchman has spent the first half of the campaign on loan – to secure the 6 foot 6 striker’s services.

According to talkSPORT, Weghorst had been willing to pay his own release clause to push through a move to Old Trafford, with the opportunity to play for one of the world’s biggest clubs being too big to pass up.

Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor had recently told GiveMeSport that a loan deal for the 30-year-old to make the move to Manchester was a possibility, which has now seemingly been proved right with the forward’s imminent arrival.

And Crook believes that Weghorst’s willingness to join United will only encourage the club’s supporters ahead of his signing.

What has Crook said about Man Utd and Weghorst?

Crook told GiveMeSport: “Beşiktaş have been playing hardball and rightly so. They denied that there was any kind of early termination clause, so it was up to United to meet their demands.

“I think there was talk that Weghorst might even be willing to pay his own release clause, which I guess is encouraging for United fans in that he really wants to make the move.”

Will Weghorst be a good signing for United?

Despite having endured a disappointing spell during his time at Burnley – where the £40k-per-week marksman only scored two goals in 20 games last season, as per Transfermarkt – the former Wolfsburg man has rediscovered the scoring touch during his loan in Turkey, hitting the back of the net nine times and providing four assists in 18 appearances, as per the same stats provider.

The 19-cap Netherlands international also made an impact for the Oranje at the World Cup last month, scoring a brace as a substitute against eventual champions Argentina in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Therefore, ten Hag and United will be hoping that Weghorst can be a reliable provider of goals for the remainder of the season, as the Red Devils look to secure a top-four finish, whilst still competing in the Europa League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
