Man United could spend €75m on January signing – “Not difficult to beat clause”

With Manchester United recently linked to Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa, the Portuguese media continues to name the Red Devils as the main contenders for his signing.

Despite the 23-year-old’s couple of mistakes at the World Cup, and a feeling from some he suffered under the pressure, there’s big confidence in the local press that the player will turn things around and continue to be in great form with the Dragons.

As former Porto striker Domingos Paciência spoke today to Radio Renascença, he talked a little about Costa’s potential.

“He starts to mature, depending on the number of games he plays. We see him getting better, more capable and like a goalkeeper who will be the number one at the national team and at FC Porto for many years to come,” said Paciência (via O Jogo).

Following the links with Manchester United, Paciência claims that despite the player’s new contract with the Dragons, his €75m release clause continues to be pretty much affordable for the Red Devils.

“Nowadays it’s not difficult to beat that clause and, as such, it could happen with Diogo Costa, because anyone who is attentive to football knows that he is one of the best in the world.”

Most of the news regarding Manchester United’s interest in Diogo Costa came out a few months ago, before his new contract with Porto and his performances at the World Cup.

Besides having agreed to a long stay with the Dragons, it also seems clear the goalkeeper couldn’t show his best when under pressure in Qatar. Those could well be a couple of reasons for the Red Devils to take a step back in this pursuit, although the Portuguese media insists on the story.
