Man Utd set to compete with Chelsea to sign€60m attacking full-back

Manchester United have been fancied to compete with Chelsea in the race to sign Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries, according to Gazzetta dello Sport (today’s edition, page 4).

The Red Devils currently have Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka as their main right-back options, but the latter has played just 76 minutes of first-team football this term.

The 25-year-old recently impressed in his first start of the campaign against Burnley, but there are still doubts whether he will be at the club at the start of next season.

United boss Erik ten Hag is reportedly a huge admirer of Dumfries and it is now claimed that the club could go head-to-head with Chelsea to land the Netherlands star.

A summer transfer appears the most likely solution. Inter want to balance their books before June 30 but are still expected to hold out for around €60 million to sell Dumfries.

Dumfries would be perfect for Ten Hag’s playing style

Dalot has been an undisputed choice for the right-back position this season when fit. He has started in 20 of the club’s 22 games across all competitions under Ten Hag.

The manager has a clear preference of Dalot over Wan-Bissaka for his progressive passing in the final third. Dumfries would be a solid upgrade for the department.

The 26-year-old was a genuine right-back during his time at PSV but over the last 18 months, he has been transformed into a right wing-back for club and country with success.

In our opinion, Dumfries can effectively slot back into the right-back spot under Ten Hag. His attacking style of play would suit the demands of the Dutch tactician.

Dumfries has bagged five goal contributions for Inter this term. He was also superb for his national side at the World Cup with one goal and two assists from five caps.

Despite playing in an advanced position, he has shown that he can contribute defensively, winning nearly 60 per cent of his ground and aerial duels this campaign.

United should have a better chance of luring him with the assurance of regular starts. We simply don’t see Dumfries displacing Reece James at Chelsea next season.
