The World Cup is now over. Domestic football resumes tonight, with Manchester United playing in the Carabao Cup tomorrow evening at home to Burnley. Make no mistake about it, this won’t be an easy win. More on that later…
Suddenly, the January transfer window is upon us. With Cristiano Ronaldo now a thing of the past, there’s a glaring need to bring in a new attacker of some sort.
Enter, Cody Gakpo.
The Dutchman has consistently been linked with a potential switch to the Theatre of Dreams since last summer. His name is predictably back in the headlines again.
It’s talkSPORT with the latest information on Gakpo – and they make a pretty bold statement.
Apparently, United are ‘determined to sign’ the 23-year-old in the January transfer window, with the club set to back their manager next month. Honestly, I just assumed there’d be very little available to the gaffer in the mid-season transfer period, so I’m pleasantly surprised.
In terms of fees and overall cost, PSV Eindhoven will entertain offers in excess of £45m to let their in-form star leave during the current time.
Gakpo, who would have cost significantly less than £45m last summer, had a superb World Cup, meaning his individual stock has risen significantly since.
The Dutchman was on United’s radar back in the summer, though Ten Hag opted to bring in Antony instead. However, he’s still intent on signing Gakpo.
A January move makes plenty of sense for United. Most notably because they’d have less competition to sign Gakpo. That could certainly play into United’s hands anyway – with no guarantee they’d have Champions League football to offer by the time next summer rolls around.
