Man United could seal deal for 13 goal Ronaldo replacement for just 8.7m in January

Manchester United are reportedly set to step up their pursuit of Borussia Monchengladbach and France striker Marcus Thuram in January as they look to improve their forward crisis.

Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure in November, a striker signing has become a necessity in the winter transfer window. Even before the 37-year-old’s exit, United’s lack of goals was a real concern for Erik ten Hag.

The Reds have scored a mere 20 goals in the Premier League so far and Ten Hag declared during the mini-tour of Spain that a striker is on his wishlist for January. Names such as Cody Gakpo, Goncalo Ramos and Victor Osimhen have been banded around but now, according to Bild, Thuram’s name has been added into the mix.

In the Bundesliga, the 25-year-old has scored an impressive 13 goals in 17 appearances for Monchengladbach. This form saw Thuram included in the France World Cup squad ahead of United’s first-choice striker Anthony Martial.

At the Qatar tournament, Thuram was used mainly as an impact substitute and was used primarily on the left wing by Didier Deschamps where he grabbed two assists. The Frenchman’s contract in Germany is set to expire at the end of this season.

Elsewhere, the Daily Mail is reporting that Swedish winger Anthony Elanga is ‘in demand’ ahead of the January transfer window. With playing time being reduced to a minimum since Ten Hag arrived from Ajax, there could be a concerted effort in the winter to find him regular minutes.

Elanga’s contract is set to expire in 2026 so it seems unlikely at this stage that any move away from Old Trafford would be permanent. After the success of Amad and Hannibal Mejbri at Sunderland and Birmingham City respectively, there could be a temptation for the 20-year-old to go out on loan to an English club to rediscover his form.
