23yo emerges as’prime target’for Man United in January transfer window: report

Cody Gakpo is believed to be the prime target for Man United in the January transfer window.

Manchester United have a certain number seven shirt available all of the sudden, with the Red Devils hoping to fill that void sooner rather than later.

It’s a tricky situation, with money still tight as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic coupled with heavy summer spending.

One name consistently linked with a potential move to Old Trafford is Cody Gakpo. The Dutchman, who currently plies his trade for PSV Eindhoven, had a super impressive World Cup campaign.

Now, the latest report from the Daily Mail‘s Simon Jones claims that the 23-year-old has emerged as a ‘prime target’ for United in the January transfer window – but only if a fee can be agreed with PSV.

Apparently, the Eredivisie club want at least £40m to let Gakpo leave – which is more than the £30m asking price in the summer when United’s interest was ended due to rising costs to sign Antony.

Jones adds that Gakpo won’t just move to any club, dismissing interest from both Leeds United and Southampton. Apparently, the attacker wants to join a side who are competing for Champions League football. United are certainly doing that right now, though it’s by no means a guarantee the Reds finish inside the top four this term.

Gakpo’s biggest asset is undoubtedly his incredible versatility. The wide man can play on either flank – or through the middle if necessary. No doubt this is what is most attracting Ten Hag to his countryman.

I just struggle to see United spending any sort of money in the mid-season window, sadly. This transfer will likely have to wait until the summer, meaning they’ll be more interested parties coupled with a higher transfer cost.
