Man United the club’most interested’in signing 28yo in the January transfer window

Man United are the club most interested in signing FC Barcelona attacker, Memphis Depay.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit from Manchester United already feels like news of the past. The Portugal international seemingly wanted a clean break. That’s exactly what happened.

For the Old Trafford club, work behind the scenes to replace Ronaldo is well underway. Erik ten Hag is no doubt assessing all his options for potential signings, presumably, looking to bring someone in as early as January.

Well, the latest name the Reds have been linked with is a familiar one; Memphis Depay.

It’s Man Utd News with the information, translating AS‘ original story, (Tuesday edition, page 26).

Apparently, United are named as the club ‘most interested’ in signing the 28-year-old in the January transfer window.

Depay’s season has been heavily disrupted by injury, not featuring since September with a long-term problem. However, anyone who has watched the World Cup will know that the attacker made his comeback a week or so ago for the Netherlands.

AS hope that his form over in Qatar will help FC Barcelona sell Memphis permanently in the January transfer window for a decent transfer fee.

With his contract expiring next summer, this should be a relatively inexpensive deal for the eventual buyer, with United seemingly at the front of the queue right now.

OTF’s verdict

I’m always a little cautious when it comes to players returning to a club they’ve struggled at in the past. There’s no changing my mind here, either.

Memphis is a brilliant player, though he always flattered to deceive at United. Perhaps there’s a chance that changes with Ten Hag in charge – though I always feel like it’s just an opportunity to re-open old wounds, which is never wise.

Personally, I’d hope to see United move for someone like Cody Gakpo instead. Though I appreciate that may be tough to do in January.
