Manchester United Football Club are seemingly working hard behind the scenes in order to replace Cristiano Ronaldo.
Erik ten Hag never really seemed fully convinced that the Portugal international would be the right fit for this system, with the player launching a scathing attack on the club. That left United with no choice but to let him leave.
Over the summer, the Reds were heavily linked with a move to sign Cody Gakpo. That deal fell through due to the rising costs in United’s move for Antony.
Now, Ten Hag is back in for Gakpo.
It’s Footy Insider with the latest information on Gakpo – and they go pretty big.
They claim United have reached an ‘agreement in principle’ to sign the 23-year-old.
Apparently, United have remained in contact with Gakpo’s camp since the summer, with the player now looking to take that next step in his career.
United still have some work to do to convince PSV Eindhoven to part with their prized asset in the January window, though they may have to wait until next summer if the Eredivisie outfit decide not to sell their star man.
It’s stated that Ten Hag is a ‘big admirer of the player who he would’ve seen a few times while manager of Ajax. On top of that, the United boss has already spoken to the player on numerous occasions.
United believe they’re well-placed to sign Gakpo even if his value rises on the back of an excellent World Cup.
The forward has his sights set on a move to a Champions League club, so if United are made to wait until next summer, finishing inside the Premier League’s top four is an absolute must.
