Man United want to seal signature of 23yo this winter, have backup plan in place

It comes as no shock to hear that Manchester United are working hard to try and sign a Cristiano Ronaldo replacement in the winter window. After all, the Old Trafford cub are now looking pretty light in that area of the field.

Anthony Martial’s injury woes do not help proceedings, with the Frenchman now leaving the gaffer with no choice other than to not fully trust him at this stage.

Cody Gakpo is a name that has often been linked with an Old Trafford move over the last four months or so. It’s no surprise to hear those rumours are back in the headlines.

It’s ESPN Netherlands with the claim, who state that United want to seal the signature of the 23-year-old man this winter. Gakpo has been in brilliant form for both PSV and the Netherlands recently, meaning interest in the attacker has been heightened.

ESPN sources state that United actually didn’t plan on making any signings in January, though that may well change following Ronaldo’s exit.

Gakpo remains the number one option, however, the club have a backup plan in place in the form of Rafael Leao. The Portuguese man plies his trade for AC Milan over in Serie A.

It’s thought that Ten Hag ‘wants more options’ on the flanks, particularly with the increased amount of games United have to play in the second half of the season following finishing as runners-up in their Europa League group.

Gakpo’s versatility makes him the dream target. He can lead the line as the main striker or play out wide. He’s also young and someone who fits the Ten Hag system perfectly.
