Erik ten Hag is apparently looking for defensive reinforcements, and Manchester United is in a three-way fight to recruit Jeremie Frimpong this summer. But in order to capture the hot right-back from Bayer Leverkusen for a low transfer price, the Red Devils will need to act soon.
With a triple still on the table as the run-in gets underway, Frimpong has contributed significantly to an amazing season under Xabi Alonso.
If Bayer defeats Werder Bremen this weekend in the BayArena, they will win the Bundesliga for the first time ever and put an end to Bayern Munich’s reign of supremacy.
In addition, Alonso’s team will play West Ham United in the Europa League quarterfinals and the 1. FC Kaiserslautern DFB-Pokal final.
They haven’t experienced any loss in any of the contests this semester, and Frimpong has been essential to their winning ways. In 36 games, he has recorded 12 goals and 11 assists from right back.
His steady performances have reportedly caught the attention of Real Madrid, Bayern, and United, all of whom are rumoured to have made contact, according to Bild.
Alonso and Simon Rolfes, the sports director of Bayer, are reportedly trying to retain Frimpong and the rest of his elite team for the upcoming campaign.
Since the 23-year-old has a contract that runs through 2028 and is said to be happy at the team, neither side is under any pressure to approve a move.
The article does note, though, that Frimpong’s current contract has a £34 million release clause that is in effect until June 14, before Euro 2024 kicks up.
With little over two months remaining, United and the Netherlands international’s other suitors may activate the clause and seal a great deal for one of Europe’s most intriguing full-backs.
After a ten-year tenure with Manchester City’s academy, Frimpong may be considering a return to England before joining Celtic in 2019.
With Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s future unclear, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS’s new sporting organisation may be thinking about improving their right-back alternatives.
