Aaron Wan-Bissaka, a defender for Manchester United, had a lacklustre effort in last night’s 1-1 Premier League tie at Brentford. With the opportunity to catch up to Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa in the Champions League race, the Red Devils entered the match at the Gtech Community Stadium.
They had a good first few minutes of play, but after that Brentford controlled the game. The Bees applied more pressure, setting up more opportunities for goals.
Mason Mount’s spectacular smash-and-grab goal in the 96th minute nearly gave United the victory, but Kristoffer Ajer’s goal for the Bees shortly after the break tied the score.
In certain areas of the pitch, United’s performance was subpar. Though there were a number of subpar performances, we thought Wan-Bissaka’s was the worst of the left-back positions.
The 26-year-old performed admirably from the position against Liverpool in the FA Cup quarterfinal, but against the Bees last night, we saw nothing of the kind.
Although Wan-Bissaka made a few tackles and clearances as expected, his positioning was subpar and the opposition was able to easily overlap him.App Store Icon Google Play Icon According to the stats, Wan-Bissaka made three tackles and five clearances, but he also lost possession 12 times and was unsuccessful in all of his aerial duels.
His lack of control, though, was the obvious worry the entire time. The Bees were clearly going after his side. His overlapping runs created a lot of space behind him. In addition, he was discovered dozing off in self-defense.
Ivan Toney scored after he narrowly avoided an offside call, but he shared some of the blame for the equaliser. In the 98th minute, Wan-Bissaka’s tardy decision-making allowed Toney to score.
Though he still had a lot of work ahead of him, the striker eventually placed the ball on a plate so that Ajer could score. We felt that Wan-Bissaka’s defensive play at left-back was lacking, and Erik ten Hag, the manager, might want to switch him back to his preferred position at right-back moving ahead.
Victor Lindelof may not be able to play against the Swede after suffering an injury last night. Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot might have to switch roles.
