According to David McDonnell of The Mirror, Manchester United is “weighing up” a deal for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes before the 2024 summer transfer market opens at Old Trafford.
Recently, INEOS completed a minority takeover of the Red Devils, with chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe having the last word in all behind-the-scenes football and sports matters.
Erik ten Hag, the head coach of Manchester United, intends to stay in his position past the end of the 2023–2024 season and get support during the summer transfer window as he works to assemble a team that can contend for significant national and international titles. Gomes is having a great season with Wolves, and at the end of this season, he might be moving.
Joao Gomes, a midfielder for Wolverhampton Wanderers, entered the Manchester United “plot” this summer.
The midfield player is valued at £40 million.
Manchester United is reportedly mulling a deal for Joao Gomes, a midfield player for Wolves. The summer transfer market for 2024 is scheduled to open in June, according to The Mirror. A holding midfielder is wanted by the Red Devils in advance of the 2024–2025 campaign, as Casemiro is expected to depart Old Trafford. According to the article, Man Utd has reportedly observed Gomes, who is valued at £40 million, multiple times. The most recent instance of this was on March 9th when Wolves defeated Fulham 2-1 in the Premier League.
In the waning hours of the 2023 winter transfer window, Wolves paid £15 million to recruit Gomes, and the midfielder quickly made a name for himself at Molineux. On his debut in February 2023, he scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Southampton. Since then, he has filled the void left by Ruben Neves in the middle of the park. After Julen Lopetegui left Wanderers in August 2023, Gary O’Neil was hired, and the South American team has reached new heights.
Gomes was recently called up to the Brazilian national team, and on March 23 at Wembley Stadium, in an international friendly against England under Gareth Southgate, he may receive his first cap. Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are rumoured to be interested in hiring the former Flamengo star.
Pitbull, as he is referred to in his native country, ‘fits the profile’ of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is hoping to reverse Manchester United’s previous practice of paying exorbitant prices to players who don’t provide value in the transfer market or on the pitch. Pedro Neto, a colleague of Gomes, has also been recognised by the Red Devils as a possible Antony substitute.
Dan Ashworth will join Man Utd ‘despite delays’
Newcastle United has placed the sporting director on gardening leave.
Despite delays, journalist Ben Jacobs recently informed GIVEMESPORT that Manchester United will eventually name Dan Ashworth of Newcastle United as their sporting director. The 53-year-old, who had expressed interest in a transfer to Old Trafford in response to a proposal from the 20-time English winners, was put on gardening leave at St. James’ Park.
Newcastle is refusing to budge on the compensation package for the former director of Brighton & Hove Albion in an attempt to get a sum they feel justifies losing one of their important backroom players. Ratcliffe wants Ashworth to be in charge of the team’s hiring practices after the Red Devils have lagged behind teams like Manchester City and Liverpool for nearly ten years due to poor business.
