Italian writer Rudy Galetti claims that Mason Greenwood of Manchester United wants to return to Old Trafford once his loan at Getafe expires at the end of the 2023–2024 season.
Prior to INEOS chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s partial ownership at the team, it was believed that the forward had no future with the Red Devils. However, Greenwood may now have chance of returning to the Premier League.
Greenwood was moved out on loan to Getafe at the conclusion of the 2023 summer transfer window after receiving a suspension from Manchester United with the arrival of head coach Erik ten Hag at the Theatre of Dreams. The Man Utd academy alum is earning playing time after sitting out the second half of the 2021–2022 season as well as the previous one.

Greenwood anticipates a Man Utd comeback.
The Getafe loanee was already informed that Old Trafford was not in his future.
Greenwood expressed his desire to rejoin Manchester United at the end of the current campaign in an article for Galetti’s CaughtOffside blog. At the conclusion of the 2023 summer transfer window, the 22-year-old left Old Trafford after it was decided by both the team and the player that it would be best for him to leave the 20-time English champions.
Manchester United banned Greenwood in January 2022 and placed him under custody following many accusations of abuse and coercive conduct. Charges against Greenwood were withdrawn more than a year later, in February 2023, following the statement of the Crown Prosecution Service that “new material” had surfaced and that important witnesses had withdrawn their involvement.
The Manchester-born football player, who Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann labelled “unstoppable,” was not added back to the Red Devils roster and will now play with an unknown future for the rest of the season. Manchester United announced in August 2023 that it would be better for the two parties to separate ways after concluding their own internal inquiry into the accusations against Greenwood:
“Everyone concerned, including Mason, is aware of the challenges in having him resume his career at Manchester United. Therefore, it has been decided by both parties that it would be best for him to do so outside of Old Trafford, and we will now collaborate with Mason to make that happen.
GMS Key Statistic: In September 2020, England defeated Iceland 1-0 in the Nations League, and Greenwood made one appearance for England in the past.
Ratcliffe remarks about the future of Greenwood
The minority owner has made hints that the forward could be able to go back.
Speaking with the media following the ratification of his minority ownership of Manchester United, Ratcliffe addressed Greenwood’s future (via The Athletic):
It’s really evident that we must choose. Understanding the facts rather than the hype will be the first step in trying to reach a fair conclusion based on principles. Will he be a nice guy? Could he play a genuine role for Manchester United? Would we and the supporters be comfortable with it?
Ratcliffe needs to handle the matter cautiously since Greenwood’s return to Manchester United would be met with outcry from fan bases and the football community worldwide. Nonetheless, it’s too soon to begin thinking about a Man Utd team that includes Greenwood again as no important choices have been made yet.
