Callum Wilson has received high marks from Steve Bruce in the wake of rumours that Manchester United may be inclined to pursue the Newcastle striker.
Old Trafford officials were reportedly “alerted” to Wilson’s possible availability during the January transfer window, according to The Peoples Person.
Financial Fair Play (FFP) standards were allegedly putting pressure on Newcastle to sell the English striker for a price of about £18 million. Eddie Howe’s preferred upfront option, Alexander Isak, meant that Wilson was considered expendable by the Tyneside club.
But in January, United’s finances were also constrained. Erik ten Hag was rumoured to desire more players to support his attacking line, but the club was too close to violating FFP regulations to approve deals for any targets.
Therefore, despite Wilson’s appealing combination of availability and a track record of scoring goals, United chose not to pursue him. Bruce is aware of the tricky circumstances that FFP has put some Premier League clubs in.
“Man Utd is always connected to players, and the events of January serve as a reminder that these [FFP] norms are unbreakable. Because you were required to follow these guidelines, there hasn’t been a lot of action. To be honest, I don’t believe I have ever seen a quieter January.
“Although I’d love to know the precise numbers, it appears that there has been a reality check across the nation.”
The former United defender lavished Wilson with praise, expressing his belief that the striker would have made a valuable addition to his old team.
“Wilson has a track record of scoring goals; just look at his stats.” The child assembles himself. Bruce disclosed, “He’s a very good player when he’s fit, but he’s unfortunately had a few injuries.” “Considering his track record and his development as a top-tier number nine since joining Newcastle, I’m not shocked at all that he’s been linked to teams like Man United.”
However, Wilson has struggled with injuries throughout his career, which has hindered his tenure at St. James’ Park and maybe turned off potential suitors.
Due to injury or absence, the 31-year-old has missed 404 days of football since moving to Newcastle from Bournemouth in 2020. Howe disclosed earlier this week that Wilson would likely miss a significant amount of time due to a chest issue.
Bruce has given the striker his blessing, but despite his clear skill in front of goal, United should be looking elsewhere this summer due to his failure to stay healthy enough to play regularly.
