According to the Spanish newspaper Sport (page 9), Manchester United is very interested in signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong this summer.

The Red Devils were keeping an eye on the Netherlands international throughout the summer of 2022. After protracted talks, the club and the Blaugrana agreed that he would be signed.

The Dutchman, though, turned down the offer to quit the team. The Catalan giants tried to push him out the exit door in an attempt to balance their books, but he was not impressed.

The midfield player reportedly having second thoughts about staying at Barcelona. Prior to this, the club had intended to extend his contract through June 2029, but that is now “impossible.”

Over the following three seasons, it is anticipated that the midfield player will make more than €20 million. The Spanish team is willing to sell him since they need to clear their debts with a large-scale transaction.

According to Sport, United “absolutely” still has interest in the player. Together with Chelsea, the Red Devils would be prepared to spend up to €100 million to acquire the Dutchman.

United is unlikely to spend a lot of money on De Jong.

For De Jong in 2022, the Red Devils agreed to pay €65 million plus an additional €20 million. They were also willing to give him the greatest salary, but ultimately, no agreement could be reached.

Sport says United might make a move for him at the end of the current season, but we don’t think the new ownership would try to sign the Dutchman.

Later this month, INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe will assume command of the football operations. The goal will be to lower the squad’s average age and salary expenditure.

As a result, players like Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, and Raphael Varane are expected to depart. Even though United might spend a lot of money in the summer transfer window, De Jong might not meet their needs.

De Jong might ask for a large salary in addition to a hefty transfer fee. He makes €406,000 a week at the moment, but he could easily want €500,000 a week to play for the team.

Ratcliffe might not be a good fit for such a move. By July, De Jong will be 27 years old. The goal might be to bring in a young defensive midfield player who has room to grow at United.

Joao Neves of Benfica would be a great fit for United, in our opinion.
