This season, Erik ten Hag’s future at Manchester United has been called into question on a few occasions, and one pretty infamous manager is already eager to take over at Old Trafford.

The state of Man Utd under Ten Hag

The Red Devils defeated Wolves 4-3 on Thursday night to earn their first Premier League victory in 2024. At Molineux, in stoppage time, Kobbie Mainoo emerged as the hero, netting a thrilling victory after United had originally given up a two-goal lead.

But during the season, things haven’t exactly gone as planned—they were eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage and lost to Newcastle United early in the EFL Cup.

With 16 games left in the Premier League, the Red Devils are now eight points outside of the top four spots. Rumours have claimed that Sir Jim Ratcliffe was considering replacing Ten Hag at Old Trafford with former Chelsea manager Graham Potter. Talks about a possible transfer have even been held. Nevertheless, another former Blues manager is eager to take the United position.

Jose Mourinho desires a return to United.

The Daily Mail claims that Jose Mourinho is considering a spectacular comeback to Old Trafford in order to take Ten Hag’s post. The former United manager, who recently departed Roma, is reportedly eager to collaborate with Ratcliffe and INEOS at United, the new leadership at the team.

“His goal is to join United again,” a buddy said. “He feels like he has unfinished business there after how it ended last time and he had made it his mission to go back.”

During his tenure at Old Trafford, Mourinho won the Europa League while leading the Red Devils from 2016 to 2018. The Portuguese manager has overseen Tottenham and Roma ever since, departing from the latter earlier this month.

Throughout his career, the 61-year-old has also received recognition. Owen Hargreaves stated, following Roma’s Europa Conference League victory in 2022, that “Mourinho is almost at his best when he is the underdog, like you saw initially when he was at Porto.” He doesn’t play football in a way that will blow people away, but he nevertheless completes the task. In football, the goal is to win, and Mourinho does so.

Additionally, Joe Cole stated, “Jose is an excellent manager for Roma.” Before this game, I spent a good thirty minutes with him, and he was in excellent form.

Looks like Mourinho has unfinished business with United, and while a return seems unlikely, it’s one to watch if Ten Hag doesn’t win the FA Cup or place in the top four of the Premier League in what would be a forgettable season following his first year in charge.
