Pundit Paul Merson of Sky Sports is perplexed by a few of Manchester United’s summer transfer acquisitions.

Man United has signed who?

Man United spent €206.7 million (£177.3 million) on seven new players during the summer transfer window. The bulk of that money went to Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount, and Andre Onana.

The Red Devils were rather busy on deadline day, securing a loan agreement for Sofyan Amrabat, a central midfielder who will join from Fiorentina on a 2024 loan, and strengthening their left-back lineup.

“In life, you have to be ready for everything, and the chance to represent this great club with such an illustrious history is one that I could not turn down,” said 26-year-old Sergio Reguilon, a left-back for Tottenham Hotspur, who was brought in on a season-long loan deal.

“After speaking with the manager, I understand what he requires from me, and I’m prepared to contribute to the team’s success.

“This season, I know I can help Manchester United; I’m ready to fight for this team and prove my abilities to everyone.”

Reguilon’s move to Old Trafford, meanwhile, did not exactly win Merson over. The Sky Sports analyst has also criticised some of United’s earlier recent transactions, raising the possibility of a financial shortfall.

During a live interview with United in Focus on Sky Sports News, the former Arsenal player remarked, “Reguilon? Fans of Manchester United are naturally concerned. Cucurella: Chelsea was unable to come up with the necessary £7 million to sign a talented player on loan. Liverpool is also rejecting offers of £150 million. What’s going on over here? Where are Manchester United heading right now?”

Is Sergio Reguilon a good player?

Given that the Spaniard has obviously fallen short of expectations as a Tottenham player and that Spurs are prepared to send him out on loan for a second straight season, Merson has good reason to be a little suspicious about the signing.

The left back was sent on loan to Atletico Madrid for the 2022–2023 season, but he did not have the desired effect at the Civitas Metropolitan Stadium, playing in just 11 La Liga games for a total of 303 minutes.

Erik ten Hag, nevertheless, was sold to Tottenham because of his elite playing experience, and the manager has had problems with some of his current left-back choices’ fitness, stating:

“Reguilon is a very skilled player with a great background who has played at major clubs in La Liga and the Premier League. He can play intense football.” Despite Tyrell Malacia’s injury and our issue with Luke Shaw, we handled the emergency scenario quite effectively.”

Though Reguilon isn’t exactly a standout addition to Man United, it’s likely that he will only be used sparingly this season, so it was crucial to acquire more depth at left-back before the summer transfer window closed.
