Following the revelation that Luke Shaw would miss months rather than weeks of activity, Manchester United is looking to add a new defender to their roster.

Erik ten Hag is now without a senior left-back due to the muscle injury, and Tyrell Malacia is also out due to an injury.

Who might succeed Luke Shaw at Manchester United?

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils are reportedly exploring three possibilities.

Marc Cucurella at Chelsea, according to the Italian journalist, is one possibility for a potential loan arrangement.

But according to Sky Sports, United is reportedly concentrating on another Premier League left-back before the transfer window ends on Friday night.

On Saturday night, they asserted that Tottenham’s Sergio Reguilon is now a possibility.

The full-back, who is valued at £13 million, is free to leave Spurs before the transfer window closes, but Fulham will be able to provide him greater playing time in the long run.

The Spaniard, at 26 years old, has had a difficult few years since leaving Spanish football for the Premier League.

He was essential to Sevilla’s 2019–20 Europe League victory, but since then, he has struggled to maintain consistency.

Since joining Spurs, he has never appeared in all 30 league games, and in order to play more frequently last season, he was compelled to travel to Atletico Madrid on loan. Despite this, he was only able to play in 11 La Liga games during another challenging season.

Reguilon, though, has a lot of potential, and any coach who can get the most out of him will find a good flying wing-back.

To get that, you only need to look back at the Europe League winning season.

According to FBref, he was in fact compared to Marcelo, the former Real Madrid superstar, and Pervis Estupinan, one of the top left-backs in the Premier League right now, during that campaign.

Estupinan was performing in Osasuna at the time before breaking through with Brighton a few years later.

Reguilon finished that season in the top 3% of full-backs in La Liga for successful take-ons, the top 7% for successful carry and touches in the attacking penalty area, and the top 8% for shot-creating activities.

According to those statistics, the now-Spurs player is a tremendous attacking asset on his best days, and he would undoubtedly contribute to filling the gap Shaw will create while recuperating.

To demonstrate their striking similarity, Estupinan placed in the top 15% for shot-creating actions during the same season, the top 6% for effective takeaways, and the best 7% for advanced carries.

Although the Ecuadorian has been far more impressive in the Premier League since making his own transfer to play in England—notably, he has ten assists in 44 games compared to Reguilon’s nine in 67—the data suggests that the Spaniard could leave an equally significant impression.

At Tottenham, he has never really had the manager who could get the best out of him. Even while he did favour wing-backs in his system, Antonio Conte’s style of play, for instance, was very conservative.

Ten Hag, though, might completely alter the course of events for Reguilon. It just depends on whether he believes he can play regularly after Shaw returns.
