As far as starts go, Manchester United’s first three weeks in the Premier League have been pretty frustrating, with shaky victories against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest sandwiched between a 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.
Erik ten Hag has a limited amount of time remaining to bring in additional players in the hopes of creating a team that is at the very least capable of a comfortable top-four finish this season, if not more now that his team’s defensive vulnerabilities have undoubtedly been revealed.
Due in large part to Luke Shaw’s injury, the Dutchman allegedly has been considering another left-back in the Premier League.
What is the newest transfer news regarding Manchester United?
On paper, Manchester United’s additions this summer have addressed a number of issues within their squad. After David de Gea left, they added Andre Onana as well as a midfielder in the form of Mason Mount and a pure striker in the form of Rasmus Hojlund.
But after three weeks, it’s clear that the Red Devils still have a lot of problems to fix if they want to develop into a team this season that can compete on all fronts.
A fresh problem has emerged among existing troubles, compounding United’s problems. And that problem naturally arises at left-back because Ten Hag’s back four is lacking on the left side due to the news of Shaw’s injury.
Fabrizio Romano claims that despite this, United have “contact” with Chelsea regarding a potential loan deal for Chelsea’s out-of-favor left-back Marc Cucurella before the transfer window closes.
The former Brighton & Hove Albion player, who reportedly cost Chelsea £60m last summer, is one of three players United is currently considering.
Should Marc Cucurella be acquired by Manchester United?
In his debut season at Stamford Bridge, Marc-Cucurella-Chelsea Cucurella appeared just 24 times in the Premier League as the Blues unexpectedly finished in the bottom half. He reportedly cost Chelsea £60 million, was the club’s 10th best performer, and appears to be in need of a transfer after failing to play a single game under Mauricio Pochettino so far this season.
Given that Pochettino has access to both Ben Chilwell and Ian Maatsen, his playing time is also unlikely to increase, perhaps opening the door for a transfer to Manchester United.
After Shaw’s injury, the Red Devils could use a left-back and would be getting a comparatively risk-free deal if they were to sign Cucurella on a loan. The Spaniard’s stated weekly salary of £175k may deter Ten Hag and company from making a deal, but as there would be no transfer fee, it might still be worthwhile, particularly if Cucurella found his best form again.
Leandro Trossard, an ex-teammate of the former Brighton player, provided the following praise for the player when he was at his best:
I’m so happy for Moises and Cucu. For us, they have been excellent. Cucu is fantastic. He has such a strong work ethic, wins duels, and is a fantastic ball player. I play close to him on the field. He has been a great addition for us.
