According to journalist Alex Crook, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag “wants” to stay at the club and “fight for his place” despite earning £190,000 per week as a “walking disaster.”
What’s fresh in Manchester United news?
This summer’s transfer business for the Red Devils has been comparatively successful thus far, with the addition of three top-notch players who should raise the calibre of the squad, if not the starting eleven.
Mason Mount’s £55 million acquisition should boost the team’s midfield and offer ten Hag some much-needed options when selecting his starting lineup before games, despite the fact that it was an expensive move.
Similarly, the addition of Andre Onana was always going to provide the squad additional options when playing out of a press, but David de Gea’s departure made his acquisition even more necessary.
Rasmus Hojlund is a bit more of an enigma, but if he can repeat his Serie A performance from the previous campaign, the team’s offence could appear stronger.
Selling players has been the one area where United has suffered in terms of transactions, and arguably no one better personifies this problem than former captain Harry Maguire.
Alex Crook explained that ten Hag truly intended to keep the defender at the club this summer when the move was called off just as the England international appeared to be moving closer to joining West Ham United.
On TalkSport, he gave a live explanation of the situation, and the video was uploaded to their YouTube channel:
“I believe money is likely a factor, but the information I’m receiving from sources at Manchester United is that Erik ten Hag wants Harry Maguire to stay and battle for his spot. He made this clear in public prior to the game on Monday night against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
“And I think that’s quite key to it all because we did a story on the transfer notebook on the TalkSport website a month or so ago, saying that Ten Hag privately told Maguire he still had a future at United. I think Maguire wanted to hear that in public, and he’s heard that now, so at the moment it looks like he’ll stay.”
Harry Maguire’s age is how old?
The 30-year-old, who was born on March 5th, 1993, in Sheffield, England, has certainly experienced a lot while playing at the Theatre of Dreams, starting with his acquisition as the most expensive defender in the world in the summer of 2019 through his promotion to captain in January 2020 and removal from captaincy just last month.
While the England international made a good impression upon arriving in Manchester, receiving the Man-of-the-Match award on his debut, and participating in all 38 of the team’s league contests in the 2019–20 season, the subsequent few years have been somewhat of a disaster for the former Leicester City star.
In the 2021–2022 season, Maguire made just 28 starts. The next year, under Ten Hag’s leadership, the £190,000–per–week player earned just eight Premier League starts and another eight substitute appearances.
However, it’s not difficult to see why given that Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are among of the players who are ahead of him and their recent subpar performances.
WhoScored reports that the former Hull City defender fell all the way to an average rating of just 6.65 in his third year with the club and 6.59 last season, which for an £80 million center-back is simply unacceptable after averaging a match rating of 7.12 in his first season with the club and 7.04 in his second.
With Maguire being dubbed a “walking disaster” by Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, it might be best for all parties to figure out a way for him to leave the team and restart his career, as even after ten Hag’s comments, the likelihood of him once more being a starter seems slim.
