An update on Manchester United’s pursuit of Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat has been made.
What’s new with Amrabat going to Manchester United?
If the Red Devils are successful in offloading both Fred and Donny van de Beek in the upcoming weeks, it’s possible that Erik ten Hag and company may intensify their interest in the Moroccan international, as noted writer Laurie Whitwell reported on Twitter.
“Real Sociedad continuing talks with #MUFC over Donny van de Beek,” the transfer insider reported. Turkish proposals for Fred, however, fall short of expectations. Sofyan Amrabat should anticipate a formal approach if there are two midfield sales.
Whitwell revealed in the article he attached for The Athletic that United had already spoken with the Serie A team about a potential transfer, and that personal terms shouldn’t be an issue because the 26-year-old has experience working with Ten Hag at FC Utrecht.
Amrabat should Man United get him.
The 6 foot 1 titan, who is estimated to be worth £30 million, made a name for himself at clubs across Europe with his outstanding performances at the World Cup in Qatar. Joe Crann of The Star called him “phenomenal” as Morocco advanced to the quarterfinals.
The sensation, who was born in the Netherlands and was dubbed a “raging bull” by journalist Amine El Amri, showed he could provide a tough defensive presence in the middle of the park by most notably providing a stunning, recovery challenge on France’s Kylian Mbappe. He also averaged an impressive 3.2 tackles and interceptions per game throughout the competition.
The former Club Brugge star is a player with an edge to his game who is also a pass master in the middle of the park and appears to be able to control the tempo of the game. He ranks in the top 5% of his European peers for pass completion and in the top 8% for progressive passes.
The tough-tackling United veteran Paul Scholes was a true genius when in possession during his lengthy tenure at Old Trafford, and his combination of a combative nature and the ability to control the show on the ball from his deep-lying slot may bring back memories of Scholes.
The one-club star, like Amrabat in certain ways, was maybe a “complete” asset in the middle of the field because of his skill on and off the ball. His Barcelona adversary, Xavi Hernandez, once stated of his abilities:
“Scholes is a fantastic player who possesses every skill. He is strong, never gets knocked off the ball, can play the final pass, scores goals, and doesn’t give the ball away.
Sir Bobby Charlton, another club legend, once said of Scholes that he could “find a way to win, to make the killer pass or produce the decisive volley” and that he was a true game-changer for United during a successful era under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Amrabat demonstrated under Ten Hag at Utrecht that he can also “make the killer pass” if necessary, recording ten assists in just 50 games while playing with the Dutchman. Amrabat isn’t quite as dangerous an attacking threat as the Englishman is, having scored just 11 goals in his professional career to date.
It remains to be seen if the Fiorentina player can maintain this level of performance in the Premier League, but it is easy to understand why Ten Hag is eager for a reunion with a player that resembles Scholes in certain ways.
