Advanced talks: Manchester United set to make bid to sign new £30m player; agents are in the UK

According to Football Insider, Manchester United’s pursuit of Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat appears to be moving forward with the player’s agents now in the UK.

Sofyan Amrabat is being signed by Man United.

This summer, Mason Mount has already been signed by the Red Devils and Erik ten Hag as a new midfielder. Prior to the 2023–24 season, the England international was the first player at Old Trafford, but Amrabat might soon follow.

Ten Hag and Amrabat previously collaborated at FC Utrecht, and recent reports indicated that a £26 million deal was imminent. However, it’s thought that United has yet to submit a bid for the midfielder because the club has been working hard to close the Rasmus Hojlund deal.

Amrabat’s future has generated a lot of discussion, especially now that his Fiorentina contract is entering its final year. When asked about his future following a preseason friendly victory over Serie D team Grosseto earlier in the week, Amrabat was guarded, responding:

“I’m not sure if I’m leaving… I might be able to stay at Fiorentina. I might stay, I don’t know.

Despite this, it appears that his agents are currently in the UK in preparation for a possible transfer to the Premier League. On Wednesday at noon, Football Insider provided an update on Man United’s acquisition of Amrabat.

They claimed that there had been “progress in talks” with the Red Devils and that the players’ representatives had arrived in Manchester. Fiorentina wants close to £30 million, and an offer is anticipated soon.

The calibre of Sofyan Amrabat?

Amrabat, who has a career-high €30 million Transfermarkt valuation, is 26 years old and seems to be in the prime of his career. He is primarily a holding midfielder but can also play in a slightly more forward central midfield position, giving Ten Hag’s team some versatility in the middle of the pitch.

The Moroccan player, who assisted his nation in reaching the World Cup semifinals in Qatar last year, received praise for his performances from former England manager Fabio Capello, who compared him to Italian legend Gennaro Gattuso.

“Amrabat would be the name I would mention if I had to, in addition to the well-known Hakim Ziyech and Achraf Hakimi. He is a fantastic runner and necessary for balance. I saw that he travelled more than 14 kilometres when playing Spain. He reminds me of Gennaro Gattuso in Morocco.

According to FBref, Amrabat has been a top performer on the ball over the last 12 months. The midfielder has ranked in the top 1% for long passes completed, top 2% for medium passes completed, and top 8% for passes into the final third when compared to his positional peers.

Therefore, he could be seen as the ideal player with quality on the ball to compete with or possibly play alongside players like Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, and Mount throughout the course of the season. As the three central midfielders Donny van de Beek, Feed, and Scott McTominay are rumoured to be up for sale this summer, a move for Amrabat could also mean the end for players like them.
