According to reports, Manchester United and Inter Milan have verbally agreed that Andre Onana will become their new custodian.

Since David de Gea’s contract has expired and he has officially left Old Trafford, ending his 12-year stay in Manchester, the Red Devils are looking for a new first-choice custodian this summer.

Onana, who has been dubbed a “superstar” by the media, has only played one season for Inter Milan before being heavily linked with a transfer to the Premier League.

The international from Cameroon, who played 145 times for Erik ten Hag’s Ajax team and kept 19 clean sheets in 41 games, had a successful first season in Italy. He helped the Serie A team advance to the Champions League final against Manchester City. Following the Istanbul championship, Pep Guardiola praised the goalie, saying:

Onana has extraordinary footwork. The strikers hold the ball up and move it around when the custodian, Onana, can read Calhanoglu and Barella perfectly to know where everyone is supposed to pass to. It is incredibly difficult. Even without this custodian, it would still be very difficult.

At the beginning of the month, personal terms between United and Onana were already settled, leaving the two clubs to negotiate a fee, which now seems to have been agreed upon.

On Wednesday, journalist Rudy Galetti used Twitter to share a new development regarding Man United and Onana. He stated that a verbal agreement had been reached between Inter and the Red Devils for a fee that would initially be worth £42 million plus an additional $5 million. However, Galetti notes that details must still be resolved:

“Andre Onana, the specifics: Man Utd and Inter already reached a verbal agreement about the transfer fee: £42m+£5m add-ons; new contacts are expected in the next 24/48h to discuss the specifics and complete the move,” the article reads. The Cameroon GK is prepared to sign on with MUFC.

Are Man Utd bringing in a fresh forward?
A verbal agreement appears to be in place, and it appears that a move for Onana is moving forward quickly. However, there may still be more incomings and outgoings before the start of the new season, so the Red Devils are not necessarily finished.

Up to 13 players, including Anthony Martial, a centre forward, are reportedly for sale. If the French attacker leaves, Ten Hag won’t have any senior striker options, which could lead to Marcus Rashford playing a central position once more.

Rasmus Hojlund of Atalanta has been mentioned frequently in connection with the signing of a new forward, though. Old Trafford officials are rumoured to have made a cash-plus-player offer for the Denmark international, but Atalanta are only interested in cash and want about £85 million for the 20-year-old.

After securing the services of Onana, focus may soon shift to a new forward as Randal Kolo Muani of Eintracht Frankfurt is thought to be another option for United.
