Ten Hag eyeing Man United swoop for “raw” £40m “livewire”, he’s just like Rashford

Harvey Barnes, a winger for Leicester City, is apparently attracting interest from Manchester United despite being close to joining rivals Newcastle United.

What are the newest transfer speculations involving Man United?

The Daily Mail claims that United and West Ham United are both interested in the Foxes star, who is expected to depart the recently relegated team this summer. United has already finalised a deal for Barnes’ countryman Mason Mount.

Although the report claims that Newcastle are still the front-runners to sign the attacker, it is said that Eddie Howe’s team is finding it difficult to match Leicester’s £40 million asking price, which might provide room for the Old Trafford team to pounce.

The former West Bromwich Albion loanee still has two years left on his contract at the King Power Stadium, but it seems highly unlikely that he would stay to help the team’s promotion quest the following season.

Harvey Barnes, does Man United need him?

Considering that Erik ten Hag already has players like Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, and Marcus Rashford at his disposal, some people may be perplexed by the idea of adding another player who mostly plays on the left flank.

However, there have been rumours that the former Ajax manager is looking for a new candidate for that position. This information was made public amid rumours that Sancho may be leaving because of recent unpopularity.

Even if United sign promising Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund, it remains to be seen if the towering Dane can be trusted after scoring just nine goals in Serie A in 2022–23. Rashford may be used as a central striker next season, as he did frequently last season.

Given those considerations, it would make sense to sign Barnes in order to provide young Garnacho competition. The speedster from Burnley has recently demonstrated his abilities by scoring 45 goals and assisting 32 others in 187 appearances for his present team.

Marcus Rashford enjoys himself on behalf of Manchester United.
Barnes could be a useful rival to his fellow Englishman while also filling the role of the academy graduate on the left if he is to be deployed through the middle. It is also noteworthy that the highly-coveted “livewire” – as hailed by pundit Alan Hutton – is also said to share a number of statistical and stylistic similarities with that man Rashford, according to FBref.

Rashford scored 17 league goals last season, while Barnes contributed with 13 top-flight goals despite Leicester’s relegation to the second division, demonstrating the similarities between the two players.

Due to this, the current talisman of the Red Devils currently ranks in the top 1% of players in his position in the top five leagues in Europe for non-penalty goals, while his Foxes counterpart is only slightly behind, coming in at the top 6%.

Barnes has the same “raw pace” that can be a serious threat for the opponent, according to Hutton, just like Rashford, who Ten Hag described as “unstoppable” for “his speed, his dribbles, and his directness”.

Finding a potential clone of Rashford in the £35k per week speedster would be a tremendous coup after seeing the impact he had last season after scoring 30 goals across all competitions.
