An update on Manchester United’s pursuit of Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat has been made.
What are the most recent transfer speculations involving Man United?
The Red Devils appear to be turning their attention to both Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund from Inter Milan and Atalanta, respectively, in their attempt to bolster Erik ten Hag’s ranks ahead of next season. The Red Devils opened the transfer window by signing Mason Mount on an initial £55 million deal.
Currently, the Old Trafford team is ratcheting up their interest in another Serie A player by the name of Amrabat, according to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Germany. The transfer insider revealed on Twitter:
“ManUtd is keeping a close eye on Sofyan #Amrabat. Although it’s not far along now, initial conversations have started. #MUFC. Recognise that at a later time in this frame, it might become a popular issue. He is also included in FC Bayern’s list. However, there is nothing firm at this time.
This comes in response to allegations made by the 26-year-old’s brother, Nordin, who claimed that Ten Hag, the player’s former FC Utrecht coach, is “charmed” by the youngster and that a €30 million (£26 million) transfer is in the works.
The calibre of Sofyan Amrabat?
The Dutch-born virtuoso, who was perhaps the “best midfielder” at the competition, according to journalist Amine El Amri, gained prominence after helping his nation advance to the World Cup quarterfinals in Qatar.
The £32k-per-week star, who El Amri described as a “raging bull” and “great footballer,” may follow in the footsteps of Juan Sebastian Veron, another talented midfielder who recently moved to Manchester from Italy.
Although the latter player’s time at the Theatre of Dreams was ultimately rather brief—he left for Chelsea in 2003 after arriving from Lazio on a £28.1 million deal in 1999—he still had a significant impact under Sir Alex Ferguson and was at the time hailed as a “world-class player” by teammate Ryan Giggs.
Veron had gained wider recognition after helping the Rome team to Scudetto glory in the 1999–2000 season, with Ferguson hailing the Argentine as a “marvellous player” upon the confirmation of his move to England, much like Amrabat, who, according to pundit Stuart Pearce, was a “colossus” on the international stage last year.
Despite not being able to really shine while wearing a United jersey, the now-retired star nonetheless made 82 appearances for the team across all competitions, according to Transfermarkt, and provided a swanky, ball-playing presence in the middle of the park.
Gary Neville, a club veteran, said that while Veron was unable to dislodge Roy Keane and Paul Scholes from their illustrious midfield partnership, he was able to bring something new to the centre of the field from his deep-lying position.
Veron, an Italian player, “moved into different positions and was fluid, trying to get the ball from the left back, et cetera,” in his style of play.
Amrabat shares that poise and skill with the ball, ranking in the top 5% of players in his position in the top five leagues in Europe for pass completion and in the top 8% for progressive passes. It is hoped that he will be able to provide the kind of lovely threaded assist that Veron famously provided for Ruud van Nistelrooy against Deportivo La Coruna in the Champions League in 2003.
Naturally, the goal will be for the Fiorentina threat to succeed even more than the former United player did in English football, helping to improve Ten Hag’s midfield division after Mount.
With Phil Jones’ departure freeing up Veron’s number four shirt, which Amrabat wears for his nation, perhaps the Moroccan can emulate the Argentine playmaker this summer.
