Sky Sports: Man United in “talks” to land “incredible” £69m ace, he could be Amad 2.0

With the Red Devils intensifying their quest for a new number nine, Manchester United is reportedly continuing their pursuit of Atalanta prodigy Rasmus Hojlund.

The 20-year-old is reportedly being negotiated for by the Old Trafford club, according to Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth. Erik ten Hag and company are also reportedly hoping to sign Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.

The transfer insider stated on Twitter about the two potential Italian transfers: “Manchester United bid worth €45m now in for Inter Milan goalie Andre Onana as per @lauriewhitwell.

“There is a value gap, but I think it can be filled. United is currently considering other options. Rasmus Hojlund is still being discussed with Atalanta.

According to 90min, the Serie A team may seek up to €80 million (£69 million) to let the Danish shooter leave, while United is now unwilling to spend more than €60 million (£51 million).

Rasmus Hojlund has scored how many goals?

Despite all the talk about the youngster’s “incredible maturity” and the fact that his former manager Christian Ilzer believes he is “similar to [Erling] Haaland,” the former Sturm Graz player is still a very raw and unproven talent, having scored just nine league goals for Atalanta last season.

The Bergamo-based team’s outrageous asking price is absurd given their underwhelming goal total and apparent resemblance to United’s earlier, expensive acquisition of Amad Diallo from the Serie A team.

The young Ivorian was just 18 years old when United paid £37 million to acquire him in January 2021, despite the fact that he had only made five first-team appearances for his previous club.

Amad has so far been a peripheral player at his parent club, making just nine first-team appearances for the Red Devils since moving to England two and a half years ago. There are hopes that the winger can finally make his mark at Old Trafford next season after scoring 14 goals on loan at Sunderland last time out.

It appears that United may have paid too much for a player who hasn’t made much of an effect at the Theatre of Dreams so far. However, it’s too early to tell whether the small wide man will improve over the next years.

Since Anthony Martial is the only senior center-forward at the club right now, Ten Hag needs a striker who can join and have an immediate impact. The Dutchman cannot afford a repeat of the Amad story, which is why there may be hesitation in bringing in Hojlund to serve as the team’s number nine option.

Even if the latter player, who has scored 12 goals in just 21 games while playing for Austria, has had flashes of brilliance in his brief career to far, his purchase would still be a risky and expensive one.

The Red Devils have gone ten years without winning a league championship, thus there is now a greater demand for immediate success.

Can Hojlund bring home the much-desired league title? That seems improbable based on his promising but not particularly prolific form in Italy…
