Onana has been strongly connected with a move to the Red Devils in recent weeks, and the two parties have apparently even reached an agreement on personal terms.
Onana will be United’s second significant summer addition after Mason Mount, but the club and Inter Milan have yet to agree on a transfer deal.
After David de Gea’s Old Trafford contract expired at the end of June, Erik ten Hag appears to be looking for a new custodian, and a reunion with Onana is reportedly on the table.
On Thursday afternoon, Fabrizio Romano revealed what he had learned about a potential move, saying the club had increased their initial offer to a total of €50 million.
Manchester United’s offer for André Onana has been upgraded. It is now worth €50 million with add-ons, or roughly €45 million + €5 million.
Inter has consistently requested a €60 million deal, but according to insiders, €55 million would be the magic number. The conversation is ongoing.
Shortly after Romano’s post, there was another update, and it appears that negotiations are moving forward. Onana has reportedly said “yes” to joining Man United, and those at Old Trafford are optimistic of completing a deal for the custodian in the neighbourhood of £45m, according to sources close to Football Insider.
Is Andre Onana competent?
With 145 appearances under the Dutchman at Ajax, more than any other manager in his career, Ten Hag will be fully aware of the attributes Onana might offer to Old Trafford.
Onana, who was dubbed a “superstar” by the media after keeping 19 clean sheets in 41 games for Inter during his debut season, was most recently commended by Pep Guardiola, who praised his superb ball-handling skills.
Finding the opening and clearing the midfield requires a rare talent. Teams typically have excellent keepers, but Onana is particularly skilled with his feet.
“When you have a custodian like Onana, together with Calhanoglu and Barella, who can read everyone’s passing intentions flawlessly, the forwards hold the ball up and move it around. It is quite challenging. Without this custodian, it would be little easier, but still quite difficult.
Ten Hag is looking for a shot-stopper who is more at ease with the ball in his hands than De Gea, so Onana would be the ideal option. The United manager described the Inter player as a “masterful custodian” last year.
Obviously, he hasn’t yet reached his pre-suspension level. But you can’t expect that of him. He has to put in a lot of effort to return there, but I have no doubt that he will succeed. He is a skilled keeper, as we have all witnessed.
Should a deal go through and even if De Gea decides to stay at Old Trafford, you’d assume that Onana would come in and take over as first choice in Manchester. And by the looks of things, it might only be a matter of time before he follows Mount out the door.
