With the aid of his “great source” inside the organisation, Rio Ferdinand provided an update on the “very complex” takeover at Manchester United.
What has changed recently with the takeover?
Man United’s supporters would have hoped to find out who their club’s new owners were by the end of the current campaign when the club was put up for sale in late November of last year.
Since the Glazers have not yet made a final decision regarding United’s ownership, there is still a great deal of uncertainty regarding the club’s future as of this writing in July.
For control of Old Trafford, there are still two offers available. Both of them are owned by Qatari businessman Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani, one by INEOS CEO Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and the other by Ratcliffe.
In contrast to Sheikh Jassim, who wants to purchase 100% of the club, the former is said to want to purchase a majority stake in the club, allowing the Glazers to remain as minority shareholders.
Ben Jacobs claims that Sheikh Jassim made his fifth and final offer for United in the first few days of June. The offer, which was reportedly worth about £5 billion, has made the Qatari the front-runner to become the new manager at Old Trafford.
Ferdinand said what?
With some hints that there might be more information on the takeover soon, former United defender Ferdinand recently provided an update on the club’s possible takeover. Ferdinand credits his inside source at Old Trafford for the information.
Ferdinand claimed in a video posted to the FIVE YouTube channel: “You know what, the biggest thing is I had some news from a very good source, my great source at Manchester United.
“Things were moving along fairly smoothly and in the right direction, but then obviously…The main difficulty, in my opinion, arises when dealing with a group of people as opposed to a single person, which can sometimes make matters extremely complicated and challenging.
“I believe Jim Ratcliffe said today that dealing with the Glazers is not a one-on-one situation, and I believe this to be the problem that has been going on behind the scenes. You are dealing with siblings in the Glazer family who are present to make a decision collectively, though I didn’t want to say it out loud. I do not believe that a single person is capable of acting alone.
In light of this, he continued, it is extremely challenging to simply say “yes.” They must go through a procedure.
Joel Beya, one of the podcast’s participants, however, remarks at the conclusion: “You know what’s funny because there’s definitely some takeover news happening. We spoke off-air, so I know you can’t say too much for whatever reason, but even from someone who isn’t as involved as you are, I am hearing some major things happening tomorrow (Tuesday).
I spoke to [David] Ornstein as well,” Ferdinand said in response. However, we have reliable sources, so even though he is knowledgeable, we are.
According to Ferdinand, there might be impending takeover news on the horizon, with Sheikh Jassim ostensibly in the lead. Ferdinand did make a point of stating, however, that Ratcliffe is still in the running and that it is still possible for the Glazers to decide not to sell after all.
The uncertainty at the moment is negatively affecting the club’s transfer plans for the upcoming season, so United supporters will be hoping that everything is resolved as soon as possible.
