Andre Onana, the Inter Milan custodian, is reportedly just a step away from joining Manchester United.
Is David de Gea quitting Manchester United?
With a large number of potential incomings and outgoings, the Red Devils may have a busy summer in the transfer window. Prior to Erik ten Hag’s second season in charge, up to 13 players, including Dean Henderson, who might complete a £15 million permanent move to Nottingham Forest, have been placed on the market for sale.
Since the Spanish goalkeeper’s deal at Old Trafford is actually due to expire in a few days, David de Gea’s future is also in doubt. Recent reports claimed that De Gea actually agreed to a new United contract that would significantly reduce his current £375,000-per-week salary; however, the Red Devils have since backed out of that agreement and have made a new proposal with even lower wages.
As a result, the team appears to be looking for a new first-choice custodian, and it appears that Onana is headed for Manchester, with those at Old Trafford previously in pole position to secure his services.
What are the most recent rumours surrounding Onana’s transfer to Man United?
Yann Sommer, Keylor Navas, and Hugo Lloris have been identified by Inter Milan as potential replacements, according to reports from Italy over the past 48 hours, and Man United are just one step away from signing Onana this summer.
Although a transfer will reportedly include bonuses as well, the Red Devils are anticipated to pay an initial €50 million (£43 million) fee for Onana.
Ten Hag and Onana were coworkers at Ajax, where the latter made 145 appearances while Ten Hag, now 27, played for the Dutchman’s team. So, including Onana’s ball skills, the United manager will be fully aware of what to expect from him.
Following the Champions League final, Pep Guardiola praised Onana’s skill with the ball and Mark Goldbridge called the shot-stopper “box office to watch when he’s got the ball under pressure.”
The strikers hold the ball up and move it around when you have a custodian like Onana who can read everyone’s passes perfectly, along with Calhanoglu and Barella. The challenge is enormous. Without this custodian, it would still be very difficult, albeit slightly easier.
It appears as though Onana will replace Ten Hag as the starting custodian soon, and it will be interesting to see if De Gea’s future is finally decided before the month is out. A move appears to be imminent.
