Breakthrough: Man Utd in pole position for £50m “superstar” after new talks; Ten Hag’s a big fan

According to a Football Insider report, Manchester United is now in the lead in the competition to sign Inter custodian Andre Onana.

What custodian will Man United be hiring?
Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, has continued to scout potential replacements for David de Gea as his future with the club is highly uncertain. Fabrizio Romano recently gave an update on their pursuit of FC Porto’s Diogo Costa.

According to Romano, who spoke to CaughtOffside, United “like” Costa, but the Portuguese international will be “expensive,” so Ten Hag might decide to look at other options.

Onana is one of these players. United representatives recently met with the agent of the Inter custodian to discuss a summer transfer, and a more recent report from Football Insider suggests a breakthrough has now been made, with £50 million the rumoured amount.

The Cameroonian shot-stopper is now in Man United’s crosshairs, the report claims, after “positive discussions” between all parties recently.

Ten Hag is said to be a “huge” fan of the 27-year-old, having previously worked with him at Ajax. Because of this past collaboration, United may be in a strong position to outbid other clubs for the player’s services, despite interest from other clubs.

The former Ajax player is interested in moving to Old Trafford, but Chelsea has also had talks with Inter Milan and they are not yet out of the running.

Andre Onana is signing with whom?
Given that he has a much higher save percentage per 90 than De Gea in the past year, Man United appear to be in a strong position to sign the £67k per week custodian. He could be a clear improvement over De Gea, too, given that he has a much higher save percentage per 90 than the Spaniard.

In addition, the Cameroonian international appears to be much more eager to participate in the play, averaging 43.81 touches per 90 in the previous year, ranking him in the 89th percentile among players in his position.

Given that De Gea’s passing range has occasionally been questioned, it is crucial that his replacement, Onana, feels at ease with the ball in his hands. Onana has won praise for his excellent passing range.

The Inter custodian, who has been hailed as a “superstar” by the media, has demonstrated that he is more than capable of taking over for De Gea, so it is exciting to hear that a transfer may be getting closer to reality.
